Failed Kickstarter Project Becomes Open Source Power-Uppable RC Car

October 18th
Most Kickstarter campaigns these days have nothing to do with raising funds. Instead, they’re used as marketing by corporations that already have the budget to bring the product to market. But there are still some startups launching Kickstarter campaigns that do genuinely need the funding. If the campaign fails, then so does the entire project. That was, unfortunately, the case with StuckAtPrototype’s Kickstarter campaign. It failed to reach its funding goal and StuckAtPrototype had to throw in the towel. But instead of giving up entirely, he decided to reengineer the product and make it open source. (Read More)

This Tesla Gadget Gives You Apple CarPlay, Google Maps And More

October 18th
Tesla’s in-car software is widely recognized as one of the best, if not the best in the automotive industry, with smooth animations, a snappy interface and the promise of added features down the line via over-the-air updates. However, it’s also widely known that Tesla EVs don’t have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and that sometimes it can be quite fiddly to get to commonly used controls like turning on the wipers or even opening the glovebox. (Read More)

Kickstarter - The Broken Empires RPG™: Sim-Lite d100 Skills-Based TTRPG

October 18th
The Broken Empires RPG Kickstarter will likely surpass half a million dollars in funding (it is currently around $370k with 12 days to go). It's an intriguing Kickstarter, but I will likely back only at the digital level (39 bucks, which is a bargain) instead of physical books. I figure if I go beyond simply reading the rules to actually running the game, I can snag a physical copy later. (Read More)

DIE in a Dungeon: Nigh-Infinite Doom

October 17th
DIE in a Dungeon is a card-based dungeon crawl for one or more players by ROLLINKUNZ! The Kickstarter has hit the target, and with ease, with a while until the November 9th closing date. There’s some doom in the dungeon, and my “nigh-infinite comes from the game’s parent, The Dungenerator dungeon generator, which is from the same illustrator. DIE in a Dungeon is an evolution, bringing the game to the cards and perhaps giving an overworked DM an alternative game for a week. You can see progress on the pitch page. (Read More)

Tomten Board Game Kickstarter Review

October 15th
Sometimes Google AI is your best friend – when the board game Tomten arrived on my doorstep looking like a cozy Christmas experience, I decided there had to be something more behind the name. A quick Google AI search turned up the best answer I think, “Tomten is a mythological creature from Scandinavian folklore who is often associated with the Christmas season and winter solstice.” It is worth noting that Chris, the designer of Tomten, provides a great explanation of the influences in his game! Can Tomten do more than just make us excited for snow, hot chocolate, and the festive season? Let’s find out! (Read More)

Kickstarter Tabletop Alert: 'Knitting Circle'

October 15th
Knitting Circle is a puzzly tile game for 1 to 4 players, ages 10 and up, and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to play. It’s currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, with a pledge level of $29 for a copy of the game. Although the game is branded as “A Calico Game,” it is a standalone and does not require Calico to play (and uses very different mechanics); however, if you do own Calico, you will be able to use the components from Knitting Circle to play a drafting variant of Calico so it can serve as a sort of mini-expansion. (Read More)

Kickstarter Tabletop Alert: It's All Over in 'Epilogue'

October 15th
Epilogue is a cooperative storytelling game for 1 to 10 players, ages 12 and up, and takes about 10–40 minutes to play (depending on how talkative everyone is). It’s currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, with a pledge level of $26 for a copy of the game. The game’s theme is telling a story about death, which can go in a lot of different directions, but I would say in general this is something you could play with younger kids as long as they’re able to read and spell a little; it would also be easy to change up the subject matter if you wanted to use the deck to create other stories. (Read More)
